Green Goddess Returns

Locomotive No.1 ‘Green Goddess’ returns from the workshop to the tracks.

9:15 at New Romney Station: Ceremonial Speech

Arguably one of the most popular of our locomotives, Green Goddess, returns to the rails on Sunday 9th June in tip top condition with refurbished boiler, extensively renovated mechanical parts and a paint finish the envy of any of the world’s heritage railways.

The Flying Scotsman of the miniature (15” gauge) railway world this is without doubt an iconic locomotive and we have paired it for this day with our most historic heritage coaches.

Tickets can be reserved on the first advertised public service with her since repairs and overhaul from New Romney (9.30 departure) to Hythe via Romney Sands. Later runs are on a first come first served basis. Tickets for the first run include unlimited travel on any service that day.

All visitors that day are likely to get more than a glimpse of Green Goddess as she is posed for pictures at our famous Hythe terminal (10.50 to 11.50) and in the special backdrop of Dungeness (1.00 to 2.20pm).

The start of the day will see a very unusual working powered by Green Goddess and her sister Northern Chief both running, one each end of the train, with their tenders leading (operating backwards others may say) from New Romney to Romney Sands.

From there Green Goddess alone will run back non-stop through New Romney like the express trains of old no doubt with much playing of her iconic whistle. A mile further on the special train of heritage carriages will stop at Romney Warren Halt where a photographic run past will take place.

The last section of the reserved train will take it to Hythe where Green Goddess will be turned on the famous turntable and will take water before posing for photographs. She will then continue in normal service to Dungeness and back with an extended stay at Dungeness where the End of the Line Restaurant will be open all day as well as the Ales by the Rails miniature pub in a hut complete with locally brewed Romney Marsh Brewery ales.

On her return to Hythe she will be again paired with heritage coaches for a parallel run back to New Romney at 4.10 with Samson and her train of more modern coaches running alongside. Both these locomotives represent the very best of RHDR engineering having been brought to the standard you will see in our own workshops by our dedicated staff, paid and volunteer, over the last three years. Watching a steam locomotive at speed from a train travelling alongside also hauled by another perfectly turned out steam locomotive is rare, if not unique, anywhere in the world. Please enjoy the spectacle as we celebrate the Return of Green Goddess.
