This is now the only station between New Romney and Dungeness. In the past there has been a station at Greatstone-on-Sea and the halts at Lade and The Pilot.

Formerly known as Maddiesons Camp (after the adjacent holiday park) it originally alternated summer and winter with Lade Halt on timetables; this stop was very popular during the summer months.

Until 1973 there was only a platform and nameboard. The station now features booking office and passing loop. In the busy weeks of the operating season there will always be two trains in at the same time, as the driver of the New Romney bound train hands the single-line token to the Dungeness bound driver.

All around us here are sea-front houses and, of course, the Romney Sands holiday camp. Further in-land you will be able to see Lydd Airport and some strange concrete devices.

These were built by the War Department (Ministry of Defence) before the last war and are, in fact, aeroplane detecting Sound Mirrors. It did and still does work, but radar came along and rather stole its thunder. There are similar devices above Hythe. At the time of their construction, a branch line was built from Maddieson's out to the building site, and the RH&DR carried the materials.

Walk in the other direction and you will find a fine sandy beach, and if the tide is out, lots and lots of sand.

How to get to Romney Sands Station

• Romney Sands station is on the coast road between Littlestone and Dungeness.
• From the M20, leave at junction 10 and follow A2070 towards Brenzett and then the A259 to New Romney. Drive through town and turn right at traffic lights, following signs to RH&DR station. Pass the station and turn right at t-junction. Follow the coast road until you reach the Romney Tavern and Romney Sands Holday Centre.
• Bus: Stagecoach buses serve Greatstone and Romney Sands from Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Hastings, Rye, Hythe (Contact Stagecoach on 08702 433711)
