A station
that has changed much over the years. Dymchurch used to be quite
busy at one time; trains used to shuttle here from
Hythe with holiday makers destined for this resort.
The town still offers a very seaside experience; sandy beach, fun-fair,
kiosks, shops, cafes and so on. You can also see Martello Towers,
built as part of the coastal defences aimed to repel Napoleon and
his troops.
The church here features in the novels of Russel Thorndyke, who
created the smuggling vicar Dr Syn. Walt Disney made a film featuring
Patrick McGooghan as the Doctor. Other, earlier British films were
made and one featured dear old George Cole.
There
is still one siding at Dymchurch, but long gone is the turntable,
signal box and main sidings. The footbridge used to span the sidings
as well as the through lines but it still features the Gents toilets
in its pillars, originally designed by Henry Greenly in 1926.
During the war and army requisitioning of the line, the armoured
train was kept near here and the station buildings became the COs
office and billet.
The last few years has seen Dymchurch station receive modifications
and refurbishment, and as all trains stop here, it is worth spending
some time in the locality.
