RHDR - The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

Stations \ Past Stations

Since opening, the railway has featured more than the six stations that serve passengers today. The original vision was for a line that truly served the local people, so several halts featured between today's surviving stations.

From Hythe, the first of these stations was Botolphs Bridge Halt. It was opened in 1927, featured a wooden shelter and a cinder platform. It was little used, became derelict and finally closed in 1939.

Before reaching Dymchurch, Burmarsh Road was passed. This was planned as a full station and had two platforms (concrete-ed in 1928), a ticket office and waiting room and signals. However, lack of use led to dereliction and demolition followed in 1948 and the halt, as it had become, closed in 1949. But this location has seen something of a revival in recent years as this is now the terminus for the Southlands School Train (New Romney), and gravel platforms are now in place.

After leaving New Romney, trains used to call at Greatstone-on Sea. Again, this was planned as a full station to serve the new town that everyone expected would grow up here in the thirties. The housing estates failed to materialise and the two platforms, bridge, booking office and other station paraphernalia soon became redundant, and a series of downgrades followed. By 1971 all of the buildings had disappeared and trains haven't stopped here since the mid seventies. A war-time shelter and some footings are all that remain...

Lade Halt used to serve the local community around Lade Fort. Now there are shops, cafes, a pub and new housing, but no Lade Halt. A feature of the original extension in 1928, the last breeze-block shelter has been demolished in the past few years of which the base is still visible next to Lade Stores.

The Pilot public house gave its name to the next station, Pilot Halt, which for a short time in 1928, acted as the terminus before Dungeness became fully operational. It originally featured a building that, after the war, was used for staff accommodation. A shelter similar to that at Lade Halt was built in 1968 but this has recently been pulled-down. In its early days, The Pilot used to feature a "fish siding".
