Stations \ New Romney

New Romney Station is the centre and base of the railway and has changed a lot over the years. One of the biggest changes coming only a year after opening when the line had to pass through the terminus, under the Littlestone Road, to Dungeness via the new extension.

It was the first station built and was inspected during building by HRH Duke of York in 1926.

At this station you will find the engine sheds, erecting shop, carriage sheds (over the main lines), workshops, permanent way depot, etc. Most of the essential day-to-day work required to keep a railway going takes place at New Romney.

During 1928, the nameboards were changed to read "Littlestone-on-Sea" in an effort to emphasise the railway's seaside location. To get to the beach, turn left out of the station and walk a good half a mile.

Turn right out of the station to get to the Cinque Port town of New Romney. Here you will find a good variety shops, supermarkets, banks, pubs, cafe's and the imposing St Nicholas Church. On the way to the town you will pass Southlands school, which is where the children who use our school train go to.

Opposite the signal box, next to the line where the engine of a Hythe bound train waits, you will find a rock garden with waterfall and model lighthouse, here are scattered the ashes of the railways founder, Captain J. E. P. Howey. And standing here and looking beyond the 24-lever signal box, you will see Red Tiles, the house that he built so that he could live close to his railway.

Since 1974, most of the station buildings have been — and are still being — renewed or modernised and if there is one or more trains in it is a magnificent place, with fine views of the lines and platforms from all around.

To help you enjoy your visit, New Romney station is the location for the Model Railway Exhibition, housed above the Heywood Buffet. There is also a children's playground and a well stocked souvenir and gift shop.

How to get to New Romney

• New Romney station is off the main A259 coast road (from Folkestone, Hythe, Hastings, etc.)
• From the M20, leave at junction 10 and follow A2070 towards Brenzett and then the A259 to New Romney. Drive through town and turn right at traffic lights, following signs to RH&DR station.
• Bus: Stagecoach buses serve New Romney from Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Hastings, Rye, Hythe (Contact Stagecoach on 08702 433711)
