RHDR - The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

Romney Warren

Romney Marsh Visitor Centre at Romney Warren

This hidden jewel is an excellent way to start your visit to Romney Marsh and two of our our trains now stop there daily to make that possible for those without a car or who just prefer (like us) to travel by the unique Marsh transport that is our railway.

Set in 11 hectares, this newly designated Local Nature Reserve harbours unspoiled dune grassland, willow scrub and wildlife-rich ponds. As an SSSI it is a nationally important site for great crested newts. Species of special interest include great diving beetles, small red-eyed damselfly and tree sparrow, along with a number of acid grassland plants.

Visitor Centre

This award winning eco-built straw-bale constructed Centre has dramatic displays about the Marsh and its heritage as well as demonstrating ways to reduce your impact on the environment. There are toilets, hot drinks, a gift shop and a wide range of tourist information. There are regular family events and booked groups are welcome. Contact details are: Contact Details:

Getting there by train

The 11.00 service from service from Dungeness, which picks up at Romney Sands at 11.18 and New Romney at 11.35 then calls at Romney Warren at 11.40 (please travel in the front 3 coaches and let the station staff know at your boarding point that you would like to alight there)

The Halt is right by the Romney Warren and it takes less than 5 minutes (no steps) to reach the Visitor Centre.

The other train of the day that calls at Romney Warren is around an hour later ( Please check times on your day of travel) and this will take you on to the next stage of your day with us, perhaps to Hythe or Dymchurch and then on from there to any point on the line

We recommend you purchased one of our DayRover tickets (£14.00 Adult, £12.50 Concessions, £7.00 Child) or a FamilyRover £38.00 (2 Adults and 2 Children). These are valid to Romney Warren Halt and entry to the Visitor Centre is free. However tickets for shorter journeys or just to the Halt are also available.

If you have a party and may want to stay at the Visitor Centre longer then please call our office on 01797-362353 and we will be able to discuss alternative arrangements

Exhibitions

As well as the main exhibition that is housed in the Visitor Centre, Kent Wildlife Trust also put on other interesting and informative exhibitions. Currently the one running until 9th May focuses on how we can make our gardens a more inviting place for wildlife. Why not take a trip on the train and find out.
